The chemicals in sunscreen can be very harmful to coral and can contribute to coral bleaching, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Every year, up to 13 million tourists go scuba diving and snorkeling, exposing coral reefs to a lot of these chemicals.

This is why you can help protect coral reefs by using reef-safe sunscreen and other personal care products especially when you'll be in the ocean.

Two of the most common messages in environmentalism are that "Climate change is your fault, so it's your responsibility to ____" and "No individual's actions are ever going to be enough. (There's nothing you can do about it)."

World HEART Initiative is dedicated to changing that narrative so that we can think productively about climate change and reduce climate anxiety that stems from helplessness in the face of this issue. We want to provide a resource that is hopeful and empowering.

OCEAN INITIATIVE

World HEART's Ocean Initiative is an ongoing project that focuses on spreading awareness of ways to lessen our impact on the ocean. The first focus is coral reefs: download our Reef-Friendly Products Guide (or send it to a friend) for the next time you're by the ocean.
